Like a lot of people I made a few New Years resolutions. You know the deal; read more, exercise, eat better, that kind of thing. These are the things that are on my list every years, but this year there was something new.
Make a living making music.
Yeah, that’s a bit reach right there, make a living making music. That’s one of those things that people are supposed to dream about when they are 15, not 55. But as much as I might like to be 40 years younger that’s just not the case, and if I’m ever going to do this there’s not a lot of time left to get my act in gear.
Of course, it’s one thing to say make a living making music and quite another thing to actually do it. It feels like that South Park episode where the garden gnomes lay out their plan.
- Steal underwear.
- Profit!
Sure, there are a lot of books out there about making money in the music business, but somehow none of them seem to apply to me. Maybe I just haven’t internalized the goal. Maybe it’s a matter of self confidence. Whatever the reason I just can’t see myself hustling for gigs at Barns and Noble or playing twice a month at the farmers’ market.
